As predicted by forecasters, Tropical Storm Dorian strengthened to wind speeds of nearly 60 mph early Thursday.

Located approximately 700 miles west of the Cape Verde Islands, the storm has slowed to a speed of 17 mph and currently poses no threat to land.

HOUSTON – On Monday, Tropical Storm Dorian began forming in the eastern Atlantic, becoming the fourth named storm of the 2013 Atlantic hurricane season. Dorian is currently located 14.3°N 49.9°W,  west-southwest of the Cape Verde Islands off the coast of west Africa.  The storm has been moving west-northwest at a rate of 21 mph, sustaining wind speeds of up to 50 mph.

Forecasters predict that Dorian will strengthen throughout Wednesday and Thursday but begin to weaken by Friday. As of right now, there is only a 13% chance that Dorian will become a Hurricane within the next 24 hours, and the probability only decreases after that.
