Tropical Storm Cristobal

Tropical Storm Cristobal became the earliest third named Atlantic storm on record on June 2, continuing the pattern of earlier and more frequent storms we have been seeing over the last few years. The storm originated as a Pacific storm, Tropical Storm Amanda, on the last day of May. As Amanda crossed over Guatemala and dissipated, the remnants began to reform over the Bay of Campeche as Tropical Depression 3. Cristobal made landfall near Ciudad del Carmen, Mexico on June 3 with peak winds of 60 mph (95km/h) and barometric pressure of 992 mbar.
While Tropical Storm Cristobal moved slowly over Mexico it lost strength only to strengthen again as it moved over the Yucatan Peninsula and into the Gulf of Mexico. Tropical Storm Cristobal made landfall in the U.S. over southeast Louisiana. Cristobal weakened but continued as a tropical depression as it traveled northward until reaching Wisconsin.
Total damages attributable to Cristobal were roughly $200 million US in Mexico and $160 million in the United States. Below is the map showing the storm’s track and varying points of its severity according to the Saffir-Simpson scale.
