Gil Becomes a Hurricane
Tropical Storm Gil strengthens to a hurricane category 1 status late Wednesday night, early Thursday morning. Hurricane Gil is now located 1,030 miles west southwest of the southern tip of Baja California with maximum sustained winds of 80 miles per hour. It is moving west northwest at 12 miles per hour.
Gil is expected to turn more west later Thursday afternoon, however no change in speed is expected throughout Friday. Gil may strengthen throughout the day, but may begin to weaken as early as tomorrow, Friday August 2.
Hurricane force winds extend outward from the eye of the storm up to 10 miles, while tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 60 miles. No land advisories have been placed.
