Hurricane Gil weakens unexpectedly on Friday, August 2 to a tropical storm after only one day with hurricane force winds. Located 1,395 miles west southwest of the southern tip of Baja California, Gil has decreased to maximum sustained winds of 70 miles per hour and is moving west at 9 miles per hour. No land warning have been placed on either California, Mexico or Hawaii.

Tropical Storm Gil is expected to continue this path through Saturday, August 3, where it will then begin to weaken further. Tropical storm force winds extend from the center of the storm up to 60 miles.
